It’s not a cover band, it’s not a tribute band… it’s Philly Undercover! We’ve asked some of our favorite artists to pay homage to their favorite artists for this series. You may not recognize these local acts as they take the stage playing full sets in their best musical disguise for one night only.

Born and raised in the suburbs of Rochester, NY, Taylor Kelly is now a fixture in the vibrant Philadelphia music scene further honing her introspective take on jazz, soul, and funk. She combines her smooth, powerful, technically-informed voice with a full horn section, addictive hip hop and electronic beats, and complex arrangements she writes herself with help from long-time collaborator and trombonist Mike Rilli. Both a vocalist and trumpet player, her sound is a dynamic blend of several established genres: she melds the improvisational looseness of jazz, the rhythmic earworms of funk, and the moving resonance of soul to carve out a niche all her own.

The Lunar Year is the art rock project of Philadelphia based musician Katie Hackett. The Lunar Year has released two full length albums (Herodias, 2017) (Katie bird 2020) and is currently recording a third. Their songs have been featured on MTV’s Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2 and The Michalaks.

Taylor Kelly has a voice that blends both the smoothness and rhythmic nature of jazz, soul and funk. Her tasteful songwriting tells tales of truth in hopes to inspire many to love, live and let go. Also a trumpet player, she proves the importance of a strong horn section and hot horn lines and strives for an instrumental-vocal approach, a rhythmic phrasing and an improvisation that is reminiscent of many of her trumpet playing influences (Chet Baker, Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis to name a few). Her musical stylings are reflective of Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder as they possess what she believes to be the true essence of music- harmonic complexity, strong melodic contour and lyrical honesty with an absolutely relentless underlying groove. Taylor has shared the stage with Moonchild, Becca Stevens, Bahamadia and Georgia Anne Muldrow. She released her third studio album, DO U FEEL ME, in June 2017 and is currently working on her next full-length album "Up Up and Away" that will be released sometime next year.
The Lunar Year is a classical-based indie rock band based out of Philadelphia, PA. The group was founded by singer/songwriter Katie Burke. Other band members include Steve Heine (Guitar, Backup Vocals), Zach McCaw (Bass) and Kevin Walker (Drums). The Lunar Year's music has been likened to Explosions in The Sky, Sigur Ros and Florence and The Machine. Kelly names Stevie Wonder, Chet Baker, Roy Hargrove, Art Farmer, and Erykah Badu as influences, integrating strong melodic contour and intricate harmonies into lyrically personal and sonically anthemic tracks. Kelly is a Berklee College of Music graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music. Along with her band, she has released five albums/EPs and has shared the stage with Moonchild, Becca Stevens, Monophonics, Neal Francis, Bahamadia, and Georgia Anne Muldrow. She was a finalist in the PHL LIVE Center Stage competition for R&B in 2018, has amassed over half a million listens for her single “California” on streaming platforms worldwide and has uplifted, inspired, and energized thousands of ardent concertgoers at hundreds of live shows with her unabashed authenticity and immersively freeing performance style. Previously, Taylor was the front-woman (Tayoncé) of Jay-Z/Beyonce tribute band For the Record, who had the unbelievable privilege of opening up for Salt N Pepa at Boston's ThrowBBaQ at City Hall in 2014. Kelly has an unyielding, marrow-deep commitment to self expression through music and has continued to transfer this passion to her listeners and live audiences with her EP, ‘All I Need’, which released February 25th 2022.
